Research for Non Researchers

Research for Non Researchers is a workshop focused on providing you with an overview of research fundamentals so that you can make decisions more effectively with your customers in mind, regardless of your company size or job title.

Fundamentals include:

  • Understanding different models of research

  • Developing operating principles for your research

  • Scoping rigorous research

  • Identifying and navigating trade offs

  • Research processes from planning through impact

Who this is for:

The ideal participant is someone who regularly interacts with (or wants to interact with) customers and wants to be more structured and rigorous in their approach. Product Managers, Designers, and Marketing Managers are all roles that have benefitted from this workshop in the past, learning how to better incorporate research into their work. This is especially true in smaller companies without a dedicated research function.

What to expect:

The day will be spent on mix of lectures, discussions, and activities - both mental and physical. We start with the idea that research is an activity and practice that everyone in a company takes part in - and explore some of the various ways that you are already doing research in your current role.

From there, we dive into some of the core pieces of rigorous research and outline important trade offs that you'll want to make in your work. We’ll focus on how to scope effective research projects and provide you with a straightforward way to move from a decision you’re trying to make to a research plan for making that decision.

The later portion of the workshop will involve peer feedback and sharing, and a group discussion of challenges you face getting research off the ground and how to address them proactively at your organizations.

I ask that you bring at least one problem and/or decision that you’re trying to make to the workshop with you, so that you can apply the processes and techniques we outline to go turn that into an actionable research plan.

What you’ll leave with:

  • Deeper understanding of what rigorous research looks like and how to make trade offs effectively in your work

  • A concrete research plan for a decision you/your team is trying to make right now, as well as the confidence to build your own in the future

  • A tool kit for basic qualitative and quantitative research approaches

  • A community of supportive individuals that you can continue to engage with after the workshop is over to strengthen your work
