Helping companies drive growth through better user research practices

I’m a research advisor and consultant who has spent the last decade shaping and contributing to research practices at some of the world’s leading organizations. I currently partner with early stage companies to build effective research practices and teach courses about research at Reforge.

Prior to this, I built and led Research Operations at Slack and spent four years at Facebook working on business tools, video products, and hardware. I also co-created the Facebook Research Associates Program and regularly speak and write about research.

Working Together

People come to me to guide them from their first research project through their first research hire and beyond. I work alongside organizations to build competence and confidence in research skills, so that they can gather the right evidence in the right ways to make critical decisions more confidently.

While every partnership is unique, some of the common threads across companies include:

  • Teaching teams how to have effective customer conversations

  • Building research processes and playbooks that the entire company can leverage

  • Hiring the company’s first researchers or research partners

  • Identifying and onboarding essential research tools

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I tend to work with organizations in one of three ways, depending on their needs — as an advisor, on a project-basis, or as a facilitator.

Advising involves me meeting with you/r team on a regular basis to discuss topics of your choice. The main outputs from this kind of engagement are feedback on your approaches, strategy, etc as well as easy access for questions in between our normal conversations. This is often a great fit for folks who want guidance/coaching, but are largely able to execute work on their own.

Project-based work involves working with you on a specific scope of work that we define. This could be building out playbooks for running research or providing direct oversight/coaching for a specific research project in a capacity that's more hands on and involved than an advising relationship might be. This can be a good fit when there is a known project/workstream that I can contribute to and you need a trained hand in execution.

Facilitating involves me delivering a specific workshop to you + your team on a given topic (i.e. how to do effective interviews) and helping you operationalize this within the organization (which includes helping you build templates/playbooks). This can be a good fit if you have a specific area of competence you want to develop within your organization.

  • For advising work, I charge a monthly retainer based on the depth of engagement. These start at $3,000/month.

For project-based work and training/workshops, I charge a flat fee based on the scope of work.

  • Many organizations I work with need to do (and are already doing) research, but don’t have enough work to justify hiring a full time researcher. Unlike most researchers, my primary orientation to an organization is advising and coaching, so I’m working with you to make myself obsolete.

That said, the final phase of work with some clients involves me hiring researchers once their company is ready.
